In this six-part mini series, documentarians Ruben Terlou and Jelle Brandt Corstius travel the New Silk Road through Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan. Countries that once formed the Old Silk Road, the trade center of the world. Most Westerners today have other associations with Central Asia: lots of oil and gas, long-serving tyrants, and violent steppe regions inhabited by uncultured types (courtesy of Sacha Baron Cohen's alter ego Borat).

Centraal-Azië kent eindeloze vlaktes, valleien en steppen, maar ook een aantal van de hoogste bergen ter wereld. Zo heeft Pakistan ruim 7000 gletsjers; er is geen land waar er meer zijn. Het zijn tikkende tijdbommen. Door de steeds hogere temperaturen smelten de gletsjers sneller dan ooit. Ruben Terlou is in het noorden waar overstromingen regelmatig hele dorpen wegvagen. In de provincie Sindh, de voedselkamer van Pakistan, ziet hij hoe verwoestend de gevolgen van de overstromingen zijn voor de miljoenen mensen die er wonen.
