Die deutschstämmige Psychologin Cathrin Blake lebt seit ihrem Studium in Galway, die Liebe zu Liam Blake, einem Kriminalkommissar, hat sie in Irland festgehalten. Cathrin spezialisierte sich auf Kriminalpsychologie und arbeitete zusammen mit ihrem Mann bei der Polizei in Galway – bis vor zehn Jahren Liam plötzlich spurlos verschwand. Cathrin verlor den Boden unter den Füßen, es bedurfte ihrer ganzen Kraft, aus dieser Krise herauszufinden. Heute hat sie die Vergangenheit hinter sich gelassen. Sie lebt mit ihrem Sohn Paul zusammen und arbeitet als Psychologin. Ihre Arbeit bei der Polizei hat sie allerdings aufgegeben. Als eines Tages auf dem Gelände eines ehemaligen „Magdalenenheims“ der katholischen Glenmore Abbey die verscharrten Skelette von Kleinkindern und eines erwachsenen Mannes gefunden werden, ist sich Cathrin sicher, dass es sich um Liam handelt. Außer bei Callum O’Connor, einem ehemaligen Kollegen und Freund Liams, trifft Cathrin mit ihrer Ahnung jedoch auf taube Ohren. Vor allem Superintendent Kelly verhält sich unerklärlich abweisend. Doch Cathrin lässt nicht locker, sie muss erfahren, was mit Liam passiert ist – auch wenn sie sich selbst in höchste Gefahr bringt.

Cathrin Blake hat sich entschlossen, neben ihrer psychiatrischen Praxis nach zehn Jahren auch wieder als Kriminalpsychologin bei der Polizei in Galway zu arbeiten. Dass sie dies in einen schweren Gewissenskonflikt führen wird, ahnt sie nicht, als sie den jungen, suizidgefährdeten Nathan Smith betreut, einen sogenannten Traveller, der mit seinem Clan ohne festen Wohnsitz durch Irland zieht. Nathan liebt Maggie Dunne, eine junge ehrgeizige Frau, ebenfalls Tinker wie er, die heimlich Psychologie studiert. Beide träumen von einer anderen, besseren Zukunft. Doch dann wird Maggie tot aufgefunden, ermordet und hergerichtet wie eine Puppe. Nathan, der bei einem Streit mit Maggie beobachtet wurde, gerät unter Mordverdacht. Doch Cathrin erkennt in der verstörenden Inszenierung die sexuellen Fantasien eines anderen ihrer Patienten – Jack Sweeney. Aber ist Jack wirklich zu einem solch brutalen Ritualmord fähig? Wurde hier die Grenze zwischen Fantasie und Verbrechen überschritten? Cathrin befindet sich in einem unauflösbaren Widerspruch zwischen ihrer Verantwortung für ihren Patienten und der Aufklärung eines grausamen Mordes.
