Die Geschichten von Spionen des Kalten Krieges und dem Leben im Überwachungsstaat ergibt längst nicht das gesamte Bild vom Alltag im Sozialismus. Nach der Wende beschrieben viele Menschen ihr Leben in der früheren DDR als "völlig normal". Manche sehnten sich nach der Sicherheit, die das System ihnen gab, andere vermissten die Privilegien, die mit einem Parteibuch verbunden waren. Wie sah der Alltag tatsächlich aus in einer Gesellschaft, in der die sozialistische Ideologie jeden Aspekt des Lebens durchdrang? Erziehung, Sport, Kunst, Arbeit, Freizeit, Unterhaltung und Familienleben - nichts blieb verschont.
