Wang Miao visita a Ding Yi, el afligido prometido de Yang Dong, quién le relata en un extraño juego de billar la frustración de Yang Dong por la extrema variabilidad de los resultados del acelerador de partículas. Wang Miao acepta a regañadientes su invitación a participar en una reunición del grupo Fronteras de la Ciencia. Más tarde, en el funeral de Yang Dong, conoce a su madre, Ye Wenjie, y le ofrece una fotografía que tomó de su hija, pero se percata de una una marca de tiempo extraña en ella. Sin embargo, en el estudio de su casa, descubre que todas sus fotos tienen una marca de tiempo similar. Después de experimentar, concluye que las marcas de tiempo son una cuenta regresiva que finaliza en 49 días.
