Description

Westminster register office is the most famous in the UK, as the backdrop to the key points in the lives of iconic British figures from royalty to politics to show business. it holds the birth, death and marriage records for a huge array of famous names such as Joan Collins, Brooklyn Beckham, Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher as well as generations of the Royal family. It is the rock and roll wedding venue of choice; Paul McCartney and Liam Gallagher have both been married there (twice) and it is one of the most popular wedding venues in the country. Thousands of marriages are registered there every year.For this series, cameras were granted full access behind the scenes to capture a unique insight into the full spectrum of real life human drama that is the every day work of the team at Marylebone.

Episode 1

In the first episode, Head Registrar Alison Cathcart, who registered Prince George's birth, conducts a wedding for couple Hollie, 27, and Simon, 41 who have no witnesses so have to pluck two willing volunteers from outside the town hall. They have a separate party planned but have come to complete the official ceremony. Alison has been a registrar for 22 years and has conducted around 5000 weddings. Despite a large number of people divorcing nowadays, the registrars at Westminster have not noticed a decline in the number of weddings.

Episode 2

In the second episode, preparations are underway to move the register office and all its records from Old Marylebone Town Hall. We also meet a woman whose job it is to register deaths for people with no relatives and see a citizenship ceremony take place for foreign nationals who have become British citizens.But first we meet head registrar Alison who has had to stop a wedding after discovering the groom is already married. He tied the knot after a drunken night out in Las Vegas 20 years earlier. Next the registrars wed Claire and Peter who have been together for 11 years and have two children together. Cameras are also present at the wedding of Sikh bride Sandy who is marrying Greek Cypriot Luis and couple Mick and Tracey who are eventually marrying after being together 20 years.
