Daniel Day-Lewis plays Jonathan, the ungainly, neglected eldest son of a family living in the Black Country. His younger brother Harold is everything he is not - athletic, handsome and clever. Despite the favoritism shown to Harold, the two boys build a close friendship that lasts a lifetime and ends in tragedy. Based on the novel by Francis Brett Young.

Part 1

1908: After dealing with a fatal accident, Dr Jonathan Dakers makes a traumatic journey which conjures up memories of his eccentric parents, his spoilt brother Harold, and his first meeting with Edie-one of the two women with whom he will fall in love. He also discovers the truth about his father's secret life.

Edie tells Jonathan that she has been meeting Harold and that she is leaving to study in Germany.Helped by Rachel, Jonathan saves the life of a child but is then forced to stand trial before the Medical Committee. He finds an ally in Rachel's friend, John Morse - and he needs all the help he can get, as the Committee is headed by Dr Craig!
